It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Helen James. Helen was a great lady for Peata – always very positive and visited with a least 3 dogs during her time. She became the first non guide-dog owner to be allowed to take a pet on the Luas when she visited St James with her dog and she also tended to collect most support in the dog walk.
On a personal level, she was the most constructive and invested voice when building the new website. I could always rely on Helen for honesty, positivity and ideas. She was so invested in Peata’s future – it was truly inspiring and motivating.
Helen asked that there be no flowers, rather donations to Peata. There will also be a collection towards Peata during the service and Peata dogs are welcome to attend, on invitation of the Monsignor.
Funeral details are as follows (from RIP.ie):
The death has occurred of Helen (Nellie) JAMES (née O’Doherty)
Dublin 7, Dublin
James, (nee O’Doherty) Helen (Nellie) (Oxmantown Road, Dublin 7) Dec. 20th 2014 (peacefully) at the Mater Hospital: beloved wife of the late Terry, loving mam of Laura, devoted grandmother of Julie, mother-in-law of the late Derrick Dalton and much beloved aunt: she will be sadly missed by her loving family, sister Bunny, neighbours, Peata Therapy Dogs Association and a wide circle of friends.
May she rest in peace.
Removal from Bourke’s Funeral Home, 71 Queen Street, Dublin 7, on Tuesday morning to The Church of The Sacred Heart, Arbour Hill, arriving for 10am Funeral Mass, with burial afterwards in Glasnevin Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Donations to Peata Therapy Dogs Association.
On Tuesday last, Peata volunteers and their humans were joined by friends and family for the annual Carol Service and pet blessing. It was a wonderful day and we would love to hear your stories! Please email firstname.lastname@example.org with tails and photos from the day to feature here on the website!
Here are some media reports of the day:

We recently heard from Oswald about his experiences as a visiting team with his mum Claire! Clearly Ozzy enjoys this experience very much, and we know his friends in the nursing home appreciate him. A little bird also told us that congratulations are in order, as Ozzy’s mum and dad are getting married! We would be delighted to hear from the other canine visitors out there (and their human “owners”). Email firstname.lastname@example.org with your article and picture.
My name is Oswald I am a two year old Bernese Mountain Dog. I look forward to visiting my local
nursing home each week. From the second my owner takes out my yellow PEATA jacket I am thrilled
to go on the outing and can hardly wait to encounter my friends. I adore the people in the nursing
home. They are so gentle and I am always happy to see them my tail wags twice as much as usual.
They are always interested in my breed history and how I got my name. Every week I get to know
them better we learn lots about each other. I feel privileged to be their visitor. I have a big heart to
share with them and I do my best to support them and make them smile.
